The supermarket, of course. The BBC reports:
The Linking Environment and Farming organization found 22% of 1,073 adults questioned did not know bacon and sausages originate from farms.
Some 47% of people did not know farms produced porridge's main ingredient.
I guess we have quite a ways to go in bringing awareness of food and farming into the mainstream, though this survey was surprising to me. Forget about the debate of local and organic, people don't even know food comes from farms. (Via Gristmill).

Does anyone else call to mind the episode of the Simpsons where Lisa became a vegetarian, and Homer mocked the idea of this "magical animal" that brought us bacon, pork and sausage?

That's a pretty scary poll, but nevertheless, a sign of the times. From doing research at the Eat Well Guide (a free online directory of sustainable food), I know first-hand that it's pretty hard to track down where the foods in our economy actually originated - which is pretty absurd and sad when you think about it. From not knowing which particular farms produced your food, it's just a hop to not caring, and from there, just a skip to thinking that the sausage on your plate emerged full-fledged in your supermarket's refrigerator.
Reverse the curse!

That is just sad! Where do they think it all grows, the supermarket?!
