I'm always a bit torn whether to break news on the blog or on an outlet with larger distribution. In the case of a USDA ruling that could severely impact organic coffee supplies - as well as other organic agricultural products from the Third World - I chose the latter. Check it on on Salon.com.

I've tried to read more about this hush-hush ruling and I haven't found a thing so far. Are there links to the changes themselves or other news stories about them? What is the best link to find out about the old rule?

I believe that the National Organic Standards Board adopted their "old" resolution in October, 2002. If you want to get a copy of it, try contacting Valerie Frances about it. She is the executive director for the NOSB at can be reached at:
Valerie Frances, Executive Director, NOSB, USDA-AMS-TMD-NOP, 1400 Independence Ave., SW., Room 4008-So., Ag Stop 0268, Washington, DC 20250-0268.
