Well, and what's really troubling about the timing here is that this season many farmers *are* taking land out of CRP (Conservation Reserve Program, which was installed to help with erosion by having farmers take land out of production and let it go to sod, which stabilizes the soil). But in most cases these farmers aren't planting organic crops--an act that in itself is not all good, since its benefits to organic dairy farmers would be balanced against the loss of land in CRP. Instead, they are planting it to conventional corn because of the ethanol boom. So rather than having unstable land in a program to help the soil stay put, it's being opened to erosion from wind and rain at the same time that it's being treated with conventional fertilizers. Environmentally that's not just a loss, it's a direct hit.
